The music, the lights, the people, and all the festive attire make homecoming a fun and interesting experience for high schoolers. It’s said to have begun at the University of Missouri, it was a way to get people to become closer as students and alumni of the school, essentially to raise school spirit. Nowadays, many high schools have a whole week dedicated to raising the school spirit and bringing the current students of the school close together in competition.
In the 1920s, the concept of homecoming spread to more secondary schools, and they quickly adopted the ideas and even brought along new traditions like pep rallies, dress-up weeks, and other games.
Of course, our school wasn’t around until 1978, so the tradition had been well established by the time Leonardtown would take on its own variation of a “Homecoming”. We have our unique class colors, our spirit stick, and more. Our very first homecoming spirit week included the themes of Sports Jersey Day, Mix and Match Day, Inside Out Day, Hat Day, and School Colors Day. In past years the dance has been hosted in various locations, though now it is consistently hosted in the Gymnasium.
For our spirit week, we have the fun and modern themes of Jerseys vs Jersey Shore, USA Day, Mamma Mia x Pirates of the Caribbean, Celebrations per Class, and in tradition, Class Colors on the day of the pep rally. Everyone was in full spirit and the halls were extra extravagant this year. The seniors made you feel like partying with their hall, the juniors had a sleek and fun St.Patty’s Day look, the sophomores immersed you in the lands of living and dead, and last but not least the freshman had funny slogans and florals.
