Seven Layers of Heaven
April 1, 2017
I would like to dedicate this article to the one and only Jason Ferris. This man makes the BEST seven layer dip on Earth. The best part is that it isn’t even his recipe. He found the secret to this concoction on the internet! I verified this with a simple google search and found many mouthwatering recipes. Jason’s best description of his seven layer dip is that, “You just stir some stuff together, and throw it in there.” Sounds complicated.
I first discovered Jason’s seven layer dip at a bonfire. The creamy, crunchy, explosive taste of the dip had me wanting more and more. I put a good hurting on that batch and Jason recently teased me with another he made for his Spanish. Where’s my batch, Jason? Long story short, if you like sour cream and salsa and lettuce and refried beans and cheese and olives and onions and a whole lot of calories, this dish is for you.
And, like Jason said: it is so easy. While there are many variations of the recipe, the general steps are as follows:
- Spread refried beans in a serving dish.
- Mix sour cream and seasoning mix in a bowl until blended and spread over beans.
- Top with cheese, guac, tomatoes, and serve with tortilla chips.
The recipe doesn’t even require seven layers. It sounds like a misnomer but this appetizer began as an American Tex-Mex dish composed of (1) refried beans, (2) guacamole, (3) sour cream, (4) picante salsa or pico de gallo or salsa verde or chopped tomatoes, (5) grated cheddar cheese or Monterey Jack cheese or a blend of the two, (6) black olives, and (7) one’s choice of toppings from cooked ground beef to jalapeño chiles. I would say that the recipe has evolved as many have since its beginnings but it never had any strict rules. This is not chef-level cooking, Raiders. As Jason says, just throw in ingredients to your taste.
So, the next time you need something to make for a superbowl party or family get-together, this showstopper is a simple choice. You cannot go wrong with these seven layers of heaven!
