In a delightful dive into the canine companions of our school staff, we gathered insights into some of the most popular dog breeds in the U.S. From playful Golden Retrievers to loyal German Shepherds, our staff shared stories, pros and cons, and heartfelt anecdotes about their furry family members. Thank you to all who participated!
Mrs. Fallon: The Loyal German Shepherd
Mrs. Fallon’s German Shepherd came to her family through a rescue organization. Initially facing behavioral challenges around small children, this loyal companion found a forever home with her family.
Pros: Gentle with family and pets, enjoys walks.
Cons: Protective and wary of strangers, needs regular exercise to avoid hyperactivity.
Recommendation: Highly recommended with early and consistent training.
Mrs. Wincelowicz: A Trio of Fluffy Love
Mrs. Wincelowicz’s household is bustling with a Samoyed and two Golden Retrievers. While Samoyeds are irresistibly cute, Golden Retrievers win hearts with their amazing personalities.
Pros: Unconditional love and great for mental health.
Cons: Samoyeds shed constantly, and Goldens can be distractingly adorable. They’ve also developed a taste for household items like pens and remote controls.
Thoughts: “They are such a big part of our family and bring endless joy.”
Mrs. Teston: The Clever Goldendoodle
Mrs. Teston’s Goldendoodle offers the perfect solution for her husband’s allergies. This hypoallergenic breed is both intelligent and affectionate.
Pros: Highly trainable, sweet, and affectionate.
Cons: Very active and stubborn, requires daily exercise (sometimes even on a treadmill!).
Mrs. Kiernen: Beagle Mix Escape Artists
Mrs. Kiernen has two Beagle mixes, one with Basset Hound traits and another with a hound lineage. She was drawn to their loyalty and good temperament.
Pros: Loyal, loving, and intelligent.
Cons: Known escape artists.
Anecdote: “Every Beagle we’ve owned has been incredibly smart—just like Snoopy!”
Mrs. Smith: A Lab with a Love for Fetch
Mrs. Smith’s Yellow Lab, Sunny, came from a family litter and has a zest for life, especially when it involves her B-A-L-L.
Pros: Playful, family-friendly, doesn’t drool or shed much.
Cons: High energy and a singular focus on fetch.
Fun Fact: Sunny learned to spell “ball” thanks to her obsession. She’s also guided by her “mama,” Hazel, a 10-year-old Border Collie mix.
Mrs. Woolford: A Shepherd’s Soulmate
Mrs. Woolford’s German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix came from a shelter in Washington, D.C. Despite her challenges, this energetic and loyal dog has become her soulmate.
Pros: Quick to learn obedience commands, fiercely loyal.
Cons: Whiny, mouthy, and full of energy.
