The fall is here and as a result our athletics at Leonardtown Highschool are kicking off. Many of our varsity teams are on hot starts and I wanted to overview their early season success.
Football
After the teams first region title appearance in school history in last year’s playoffs, hopes were high that the good times would keep on rolling in this year’s season. This hope was put to a stark test in week 1 as the Leonardtown Raiders faced off against the previous year’s state finalist North Point Eagles. The Raiders pulled off a huge upset winning 21-20 and the following week put up a dominating win against Thomas Stone 35-0. As a string of away games come up for Coach Cunningham’s roster, let’s see if the Raiders can keep the momentum and have another historic season.
Golf
In there first two meets the golf team have proved why they were predicted to be in the top of the conference. When they went against McDonough, North Point and St. Charles the golf team took control early and never let up the lead resulting in a dominant win. The squad is led by the likes of Cooper Ferris and Brayden Owen. Cooper stated that he is excited that his senior year is starting off on the foot and is hopeful that this group can succeed in the SMAC Championship meet.
Field Hockey
Other than a close loss to Virginias state champions, field hockey has been playing with their food as recent multiple 16-0 wins against Northern and North Points put SMAC on watch that they are a force to be reckoned with. Another shutout vs Huntingtown keeps the pressure on as their road to another SMAC championship game is on. The class of 2025 including Lily Coombs, Racheal Webster and Kendall Vickers are hoping to end their highschool career with a championship of their own.
Girls Soccer
A senior led group has been given the reins to this team and they are running with it well so far. An undefeated start is a promising start to hopefully a season that ends in a championship of some sort. A successful season last year was cut short by Broadneck but this group looks to have a spark that can take them over the hump and succeed.
Boys Soccer
Coming off a 4A State Championship the boys soccer team has not let off the pedal as they have done nothing but dominate in there first 5 games. Against their SMAC competitors the score differential combines to 24-0 which is utterly insane. An upcoming game against DeMatha will test this year’s squad on if they have another shot at a state championship. All I know is that my strong bucks are on a repeat.
Volleyball
With 2 state title appearances in their past 3 seasons the Leonardtown varsity volleyball team is hoping to break through and bring back the first volleyball state championship in school history. When speaking to Coach Correll he believes that this group has the skill and the talent to make a run and do what previous teams didn’t do and bring home a title.
Cross Country
The running Raiders look to be off to a good start in their cross country seasons. In their only meet so far they took on Huntingtown, Northern and North Point. A quality showing by the likes of Kody Clark and Grant Pennell lead the Raiders to success. Let’s keep the success going Raiders!
