The NFL’s Pro Bowl has seen many changes over the years but one thing stays the same, viewership is plummeting. The NFL has gone from a single game between NFC and AFC to the “Pro Bowl Games” where they have a combination of games like dodgeball and precision passing. These changes have not moved the needle and with the most recent change of going from a full contact Pro Bowl to a flag football game has left viewers confused and disinterested. The NFL’s Pro Bowl festivities have always felt a bit lacking compared to the other leagues and fans along with players are hoping for innovation.
The MLB’s All Star competitions are consistently the most viewed and rated the highest out of the 4 North American sports. This is because their competitions are rooted in tradition, uniqueness and fan involvement. The MLB’s first official Home Run Derby was in 1985 and has consistently held a strong viewership rating and has kept fans happy but why? This is because it is a unique competition that allows fans to vote on the contestants who participate. The NFL can bring similar principles into their pro bowl festivities. For example a competition in which a kicker can kick the longest field goal with a cash prize would be a great addition. Also when looking at the NBA’s In Season Tournament and its resounding success you saw players playing extremely hard just for the chance of winning a million dollars. If you put a cash prize for the winners of a full contact Pro Bowl you would find that fan interest and viewership would rise.
The NFL is a dangerous sport especially compared to the MLB and NBA but I think this can be worked around. I personally like that it is the week before the super bowl and missing players competing in the championship is unfortunate but with calculated additions with a center on raising the fan experience will make a better product for all.
