During this past NBA offseason, It became apparent that there were a few teams who were “ahead of the pack” in terms of roster talent. What was unexpected was that one team would seemingly dominate through most of the regular season, as we are seeing right now.
As of today, March 8th, 2024, the Boston Celtics are on a measly two game losing streak. This is tied for their worst losing streak of this season. The Celtics have been firmly in control of the Eastern Conference of the NBA, with a modest record of 48-14 thus far. They have been far and away the most dominant team of this season, and as the title of this article states, the Celtics have even been rewriting the record books.
With their 52-point-win over the Golden State Warriors on March 3rd, the Celtics became the first NBA team to ever notch three 50+ point wins in a single season. Led by superstar Jayson Tatum, and other stars such as Jaylen Brown, and Kristaps Porziņģis, the C’s have repeatedly been put on top of NBA power-rankings by outlets such as NBC Sports, ESPN, and Sports Illustrated.
In terms of advanced stats/metrics, the Celtics are just as dominant. Through 62 games, the C’s have an offensive rating (stat which measures points scored over 100 possessions) of 122.4, which would be the highest ever recorded by a team in single season history. In addition to offensive rating, the C’s hold a defensive rating of 111.3, which is third in the league currently. When you pair one of the best offensive teams in history with an elite defensive presence, you create one of the best statistical teams ever. The Celtics have a net rating (offensive rating minus defensive rating) of 11.1, which ranks fifth EVER, only behind two of Michael Jordan’s teams (Both NBA Champs), the 2016-17 Warriors (NBA Champs), the 2015-16 Spurs (won 67/82 games), and the 2007-08 Celtics (NBA Champs).
Who cares? Well, it’s always fun to make history, and when it’s happening right in front of you, it’s important to appreciate greatness. While regular season success is measured by wins, losses, and other metrics, true history and immortality is measured by championships. If the Celtics can’t get it done come playoff time, then a lot of this won’t matter. Be sure to tune in and watch closely, you never know when history is being made!
