All teenagers fantasize about the freedom and responsibility that comes with finally acquiring their driver’s license when they turn sixteen (and six months). This privilege is a common characteristic of young adulthood, and is a very exciting event during your junior year. That being said, students expect to exercise this freedom by driving to school every day. With the LHS population near 2,000 kids, parking accommodations for all the student drivers is a difficult task. The brand new principle and administration took on this challenge, and recently revised the parking regulations at LHS to make student parking more accessible and realistic.
Last year, the parking rules allowed students to park in C Lot, (Parking lot near Leonardtown Middle School) senior lot, (Near trailers) and Visitors parking. (Front of main building) Most would agree that these alternative options to the regular A Lot and B Lot caused confusion and disorganization. This year, students are permitted to either park in A Lot of B Lot, according to their pass. There are clear signs around the lots and no actual assigned spots. All of these changes have the LHS students talking. “I’m happy with the new parking rules. The system seems more organized than last year” said senior Michelle Lower, who is pleased with the alterations. Chad Selph, a junior at LHS, elaborates: “It’s nice that no one has to worry about getting tickets anymore. You can just park and focus on the school day.”
It’s evident that the new administration has already made their positive mark on the daily system at LHS, especially with parking. If the population of student drivers increases, more drastic changes may have to occur, such as extending a parking lot or sharing the bus loop. But until then, the student body seems pretty content.
