On Friday April 4th, 2025 there will be a day of no silent, peaceful protest for support of individuals in the LGBTQ+ community that don’t feel accepted or safe enough to come out and be open about being queer. The protest will consist of making a silence pact through the first to fifth period. Also just wearing pink will be a sign of support. Then during the rest of the school day like lunch, 7th, and 8th period to show your support of the LGBTQ+ community and share the struggles that people in the community face. It’s advised to give your teachers notice but principal Copsey has already approved that, as it does no harm, student’s are allowed to protest.
The Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) is participating the most but other groups of students are also participating such as the theatre department. Do not be afraid to stand with what you believe in and be open to new ideas. Pride in being you is what the protest is all about and that we stand with everyone no matter the situation. Some topics you can talk about once the silence period is over are favorite artists, sharing queer history, and perhaps talking about the current state of support that has been given from the government. The political climate hasn’t been the most supportive as of late. Such as gay marriage being threatened to be reviewed again. Potentially harmful laws towards transgender individuals such as not being able to legally change your gender are potentially being introduced on the federal level. Even the notion that there are only two genders federally from point of conception. Which would mean everyone is legally a female. So another thing you can do is email your local government representative to push for support of LGBTQ+ issues when it comes to bills.
All in all, individuals in the LGBTQ+ community have been put through the wringer lately and showing extra support is the aim. The new wave of homophobic views even up in the federal level has scared some to go back in the closet. As people are hiding their true self in fear of their safety or what others think. This day of silence is for them. To stand with all who are facing turmoil at the moment who can’t show their pride. Together we can come together to make change. So take pride in who you are and help others feel that same safety. For any more information visit GSA on Tuesdays in room E37 or visit https://www.glsen.org/dayofnosilence.
