75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor
December 9, 2016
As of December 7, 2016, it has been exactly 75 years since the Japanese attacked an American Naval Base with heavy artillery weapons. This is not as much about what happened on that day in 1941 as how we remember it. If anything, this article may give you insight about how to remember and honor the memories of those lost in the attack.
The attack on Pearl Harbor was not only a huge tragedy for the United States, but also the beginning of arguably the most infamous war the country has ever seen; World War II. At the end of the war, the United States came out on top, but not without casualties. The attack on Pearl Harbor resulted in the loss of over 2,000 soldiers and sailors. The Japanese also destroyed around 20 Navy vessels and 300 airplanes. This day is often labeled “A Date which will Live in Infamy,” as said by Franklin Roosevelt.
How can we honor this tragic day? Well, there are a number of ways. Many people sport their patriotic red, white, and blue. If you are ever in Hawaii, the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial is located at Pearl Harbor, as it was one of the largest ships lost in the attacks. Locally, at Washington D.C., there is a parade to remember those lost in the attacks. If you are unable to travel anywhere, the simplest thing to do is just take a moment and remember. Take one minute and honor those who died that day, and their loved ones who had to deal with the grief of losing someone so close to them.
This day commemorates 75 years since this horrible attack on our country. No matter when you are reading this, take a moment to honor this tragedy. This is an event that should always be remembered. An event that should never be forgotten.
